March 12, 2025 - Salary Changes

Any change in salary for newly elected officials must be passed by ordinance fourteen (14) business days before the election. The salary change will only apply to those officials whose terms begin after the election.

March 18, 2025 - Notice of Election Resolution

In addition to the requirements of the Oklahoma Open Meeting Act, notice of the biennial town meeting and any special town meeting for the purpose of electing officers shall be given by publishing notice of the meeting stating the date, time, place and agenda at least ten (10) business days before the date of the meeting. The notice shall be given by posting the agenda in at least five (5) public places in the municipality. The notice shall list the offices to be filled, including the number of officers to be elected for four-year terms and the number of officers to be elected to fill unexpired terms, and the questions to be voted on, if any (11 O.S. Sec. 16-304). 

April 01, 2025 - Election

A biennial town meeting of the voters shall be held on the first Tuesday in April in each odd-numbered year for the purpose of electing municipal officers and considering questions raised by initiative or referendum (11 O.S. Sec. 16-303).

April 2-4, 2025 - Contesting Results

Any person nominated for municipal office may, at any time before 5:00 p.m. of the third business day following the town meeting in which he or she was nominated, contest the correctness of the announced results of said election by filing a written petition with the district court of the county in which the municipality is located (11 O.S. Sec. 16-310).

April 14, 2025 - Taking Office

The term of office for an elected official shall begin at 12:00 noon on the second Monday following the general municipal election (11 O.S. Sec. 8-102). Elected officials may be sworn in before that time. The oath of office may be taken outside of a meeting if a swearing-in ceremony cannot be arranged in a timely manner. Oaths can be administered by all officers authorized by state law including the mayor, municipal clerk, municipal judge and other such officers as the municipal governing body has authorized (11 O.S. Sec. 8-104). State law (Title 11 O.S., Section 8-114) requires each person elected or appointed for the first time as an officer of a municipality to attend an institute for municipal officials.

TRANSITIONAL PROVISIONS FOR MUNICIPALITIES
NOT IN CONFORMANCE WITH GENERAL ELECTION PROCEDURE

11 O. S. Sec. 16-213

A. If the term of an elected officer as set forth in the notice of the last election for the office will expire in an even-numbered year, a regular municipal election or town meeting, if the municipality is subject to the Oklahoma Town Meeting Act, shall be held in order to elect a successor. The term of the successor shall be either three (3) or five (5) years as necessary in order to comply with the provisions of Section 16-101 et. seq. of this title. Thereafter, the term of said office shall be four (4) years. Any such election or town meeting held in an even numbered year shall be conducted in the manner provided by law applicable to municipal elections or town meetings, whichever is appropriate.

B. If the term of an elected officer as set forth in the notice of the last election for the office will expire in an odd-numbered year, but the term of office does not coincide with the offices named in Section 16-201 et. seq. of this title, a regular municipal election or town meeting shall be held in order to elect a successor. The term of the successor shall be either two (2) or four (4) years as necessary in order to comply with the provisions of Section 16-101 et. seq. of this title. Thereafter the term of said office shall be four (4) years.
