Alex chase suspects arraigned
The two men involved in Monday’s chase with Alex Police were arraigned
yesterday in District Court.
According to the affidavit, Dustin Lance Powell, 28, of Newalla, and Joseph
Shawn Harvie, 26, of Norman, were in a vehicle stolen from Norman when they
were noticed running a stop sign in Alex.
Cpt. Randy Minyard of Alex PD began a pursuit heading east on Hwy. 19. The
vehicles quickly reached in excess of 100 mph and continued into Bradley,
where the suspects turned north on Main Street.
Minyard followed the vehicle as it turned west onto Old Bradley Road. After
about a mile, the suspects turned north on a gravel road and then drove
through a barbed wire fence into an open field.
The vehicle continued some distance into the field before it finally
stopped. The driver, Powell, and the passenger, Harvie, bailed out of the
vehicle and began running toward a riverbed.
Officer Minyard followed on foot. At the top of an embankment, Officer
Minyard drew his duty weapon and ordered Powell, who was running in the
riverbed, to the ground. After being ordered several times, Powell complied
and was handcuffed.
Minyard then began to order Harvie, who was 20 yards away, in the same
manner. By this time, Chief Tom Arnold had arrived on the scene and was able
to assist with Harvie’s arrest.
Between prior felony convictions and felony warrants, Assistant District
Attorney Bret Burns requested that bond be set at $100,000 for both.
Preliminary hearings for both men have been set for April 6.
